Nothing to see here… just a Common Loon running down a lake. Loons can’t take off from land. They require anywhere from 200-600 feet to run on the water and gain enough speed for lift-off. #4k120fps #sonya1ii #commonloon #runningonwater | Ken Anderson Photography

The common loon is, without doubt, one of the most unique and beautiful birds that call the Northeast home! This loon had a very quick turnaround after being found stranded away from any sources of water yesterday. After being transferred to us for care, our team made a thorough assessment and deemed this lucky loon ready to head straight back out. Our team coordinated with local partners to determine the body of water this loon was believed to have initially come from and they made a triumphant

Like many loon patients, this Common Loon was treated for injuries related to landing on the wrong kind of surface. These seabirds sometimes confuse wet pavement for the surface of a lake or pond. This loon was brought to another rehabilitation center after it had hurt its feet and feathers after landing on pavement. The loon was then transferred to our facility for ongoing care and housing in a deep outdoor pool. After two weeks and a lot of fish, the loon was ready to return the wild with the

What a lovely release of one of our Common Loons! If you remember our post about loons from a few weeks ago, you know that these birds cannot take off from land. Like others in our care, this loon found himself stranded on a local beach. After recovering and regaining his strength, he was released right on the Intracoastal Waterway. As you can see, he wasted no time diving into the water! Please spread the word that we continue to need small-to-medium sized fish. This is only one of over a dozen

Common Loons come ashore to nest, but they mostly spend their lives living on the water or migrating over land twice a year. They are perfectly designed for diving, catching fish, and consuming them underwater. Most likely, this adult loon was migrating north in April when it was discovered by a Good Samaritan on a residential city street, unable to take off. Sometimes at night, loons mistake wet, shiny roadways or small puddles for larger bodies of water and land on them, but then they are unab

On Monday this Common Loon was found grounded near Chemult. Once we arrived and checked the little guy over, it was apparent the bird had just mistaken wet pavement for water and crash landed. Being a diving bird (like diving ducks and grebes) loons have legs placed very far back on their bodies. They are designed for diving, not walking on land. These birds must have water to take off again. So patient 2025-200 just needed a lift to the nearest lake where it took to the water like a loon! #wild

This Common Loon may have mislanded, as aquatic birds sometimes do at night, mistaking a puddle or wet pavement for deeper water, especially given all the recent rain we have had. Loons are incredibly strong and agile divers, propelled by their well-placed legs and webbed feet near the back of their bodies. However, they do need a running start across the surface of a body of water to become airborne, as they were not designed to walk well or take off on land. This particular adult Common Loon w

Turn your sound on for this special call! The wails and yodels of a Common Loon are often a characteristic sound of early summer. Occasionally, loons are found stranded on wet roads or parking lots after mistaking them for waterways. Loons require anywhere from 30 yards to a 1/4 mile of water to be able to take off flying. Fortunately, this loon had no injuries and was able to be released shortly after being admitted. Fun Fact: Common Loons can hold their breath underwater for up to 8 minutes! |

This beautiful common loon repeatedly dove, but came up empty. It also took a break to scratch its head with its foot. 🥹 Common loons spend summers across much of Alaska, Canada and parts of northern states. They can be found across much of the country during migration when they move toward coastal ocean waters. 🎥 Courtney Celley/USFWS | U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

This Common Loon came in from slatington after a possible vehicular strike. Upon xrays, a pellet/bb was found in his face. After reviewing the radiographs with our avian vet, the pellet was not of concern and confirmed the bird should be released so long as he was in good health otherwise. After extensive research of the area, the Lehigh River was deemed the closest large body of water. (Loons need 100-600 foot "runway" in order to take-off) While the current of the river isn't the most ideal, c

This adult common loon came to us Tuesday after being found in a road. It had minor abrasions to its feet which healed up quickly. We checked its blood for lead which was not an issue. Loons and other diving birds often mistake wet blacktop for a body of water and try to land on it. Many of these birds are then unable to take off without being in water. And most of them cannot walk on land because of their leg placement, so they become stranded. If you find a diving bird on or near a road, it ve
